Comcast NBCUniversal intends to construct a second "Universal Horror Unleashed" attraction in the River West area of the Windy City, directly across the street from Bally's Chicago Casino, which is scheduled to open in September 2026.
This will be Universal's second permanent non-theme park horror attraction. This August, the first one will open in the AREA15 Immersive Entertainment District of Las Vegas.
The renowned "Halloween Horror Nights" event at Universal's two theme parks in the United States is the foundation of the new brand.
The Chicago version, which will take over the 114,000 square foot old Chicago Tribune Distribution Center at 700 W. Chicago Ave., will be 4,000 feet bigger than the Las Vegas version.
That is the same location that was supposed to be demolished for Halsted Landing, a mixed-use project by the Canadian developer Onni Group. The project was put on hold due to a number of union and community objections, but since Universal's lease only lasts until 2037, it may be resurrected.
"Universal Horror Unleashed" in Chicago will open right across the street from Bally's sometime in 2027. The 940,000-square-foot former Chicago Tribune Freedom Center is now the site of the $1.4 casino project, which has faced numerous obstacles. The newspaper was printed on that 30-acre property between 1981 and 2020.
In order to start bringing in tax money for the city, a temporary casino with 34,000 square feet of gaming space opened in September 2023 within the Medinah Temple at 600 N. Wabash Ave.
The two new developments are anticipated to turn the River West area, which stretches along the north bank of the Chicago River, from a collection of abandoned lots, former industrial warehouses, and residential loft conversions into a center for entertainment.
Disney's virtual theme park, DisneyQuest, shuttered two years after it opened in River West in 1999, despite the fact that success could seem inevitable.
